Carlisle “Lisle” Jamison de Vries (born 24 February 1992) is a British singer and songwriter best known for being the vocalist of the music duo Blackcurrent.

early life de Vries was born in Bridlington, England. He is of English, Dutch, and German descent. His father, Gregory de Vries, is a fisherman and his mother, Anneliese Böhm-de Vries, is a ballet instructor. He was raised primarily by his father in Bridlington and has one younger brother, Roman.

de Vries’s parents married after a few months of dating and conceived him and his brother in the throes of what he has designated “a Kafkaesque whirlwind romance between two people who were completely unsuited for one another.” The couple divorced when de Vries was five years old and his mother opted to move closer to her family in Berlin, Germany while his father took care of him and his brother. Even though his parents shared custody of him, conflicting schedules and travel expenses made it so de Vries saw his mother no more than twice a year, and he has stated that being isolated from his mother during his formative years, as well as having a poor relationship with his father and his brother, was both “detrimental to his mental well-being” and “fundamental to the development of [his] creative voice.”

career de Vries developed an interest in music when he heard The Beatles’ White Album as a child, but he was reluctant to express it while he was growing up for fear of “upsetting what small semblance of peace existed between [him] and [his] father.” In 2012, at the age of 20, he met guitarist Harry Draper outside of a pub in Bridlington, where the two performed an impromptu rendition of The Smiths’ “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” after bonding over the stickers on Draper’s guitar case. In interviews, de Vries has described Draper as having an “ethereal” stage presence and has said that performing with him for the first time was a “transcendent” experience, even citing it as the reason for his decision to pursue a music career despite his uncultivated talent. In the years that followed, de Vries began writing songs in collaboration with Draper, drawing inspiration from his own life and the lives of those around him to come up with lyrics while Draper handled instrumentation. In 2014, the pair moved to London together to further their musical venture, which they named Blackcurrent as an homage to their seaside hometown and to “the staggering amount of Ribena” they consumed while songwriting. Their debut EP, Give Me Something, was released on 19 September of that same year with their second, Oceans, coming just four months later on 21 January 2015.

Blackcurrent spent the next year touring in Europe. Their debut album, Tell Me It’s Real, was released on 29 January 2016. de Vries has described the songs on the album as “very personal although not necessarily autobiographical.”

personal life de Vries splits his time between the flat he shares with Draper in London and a modest studio apartment in Los Angeles, which he began renting in early 2016.

de Vries’s sexual orientation has been a subject of debate among fans. He has been romantically linked to both men and women, including musician Oliver Capullo, but has never confirmed a relationship with any individual. He has stated that he prefers to keep the details of his personal life private and is “surprised that people are bothered enough to try to label [him] as one thing or the other.”
